What to do When a Recipe Stinks (or You Set the Kitchen on Fire)?

A few weeks ago, I had this craving for cheesecake. I’ve made a few cheesecake recipes in the past, but I wanted to Pinter-Test a new recipe so I could post about it on this blog.

The result was such a disaster that it’s not even worth a PinterMESS post. I wouldn’t share this recipe with my worst enemy. The crust was way too crumbly. Then it started to burn. Then the edges of the cake itself started to burn. The middle was still goopy, and began to crack like crazy. It was downright disgusting.

I spend a lot of time cooking and baking, and sometimes, I completely fail.

When this happens, you have two choices: get upset or laugh.

I choose the “laugh” option. At the end of the day, it was just a cheesecake. I know a lot of people who get upset about spilled milk or who cry over a fallen souffle, but it doesn’t have to be a big deal unless you make it a big deal. Even professional chefs set the kitchen on fire occasionally.

And a disaster recipe isn’t always a disaster!

  • Too-dark cookies and hard brownies are perfect for crumbling into ice cream
  • Burnt or dry meat is perfect as a treat for the dog (check with your vet for a list of foods your dog can have)
  • Undercooked meat that’s done on the outside can often be microwaved to finish the cooking process inside

You usually don’t have to waste food. Instead of getting upset, use this as a chance to get creative!

And in those moment when you do have a completely disgusting cheesecake on your hands? Toss it out while you’re laughing, not crying. Some recipes are just really, really bad. Don’t blame yourself or overreact. If your kitchen is on fire, put it out and move on to the next awesome recipe! 🙂

  1. Biggest disaster: my first time making a box of Betty Crocker Au Gratin potatoes. It wasn’t even really my fault, to be honest; how was I to know that the box had been invaded by little red ants, who apparently wanted to commit suicide (anticide?) and be nuked in the 1980’s reactor that was our microwave. Dinner was a bit ruined; and being farm folk, we almost ate it… Dad made jokes about extra protein while I quietly cried. I didn’t cook again, until my then boyfriend (now hubby)made supper one night. Chicken Noodle soup, easy, right? Tastes a bit funky if you forget to put in water,though. I have had my share of casseroles that smelled like death and had to be put out of their misery via the garbage, but otherwise, I keep it simple, for health and safety reasons. 🙂
