Growing up, our dad would occasionally grill some steaks and make homemade ice cream in our old-fashioned old cream maker, but it was our mom (Sharon) who did the cooking, and certainly the baking. We always had lots of goodies in the house, and my dad loved nothing more than her red velvet treats.
Then, one day, maybe 15 years ago, we were having a mother-daughters shopping day. Jessica and I were out with our mom, and when we came home, we could smell something in the kitchen. We wondered up the stairs only to find my father, who I had previously never seen bake in his in entire life, making red velvet whoopie pies, one of his favorite treats of all time. The best part of this story is that he had a HUGE red food coloring stain on his white shirt that had soaked through to his stomach. His belly was red for days.
The whoopie pies were actually pretty good. I’ll give him that.
Today, my dad pesters my mom in the kitchen more often than he pitches in to help prepare anything, but he still reminds us that he can make darn good baked goods if he wants to!

Since Papa Boyer’s favorite treats are red velvet, I thought I’d take this opportunities to link back to our favorite red velvet recipes, which you might have missed, along with a few recipes from Pinterest that we want to try soon. Enjoy! (And Happy Father’s Day, Dad!)
The recipe that started it all: Red Velvet Whoopie Pies. If you’ve never had a whoopie pie, they are a Pennsylvania Dutch treat where you have cream between two cake-like cookies. I’ve seen chocolate, vanilla, banana, and tons of other whoopie pie flavors, but the favorite in our household will always be red velvet.
Warning: they are kind of a pain in the butt to make. This is definitely not a “quick and easy” recipe that you can just whip out in a half hour when you need a take-along to a potluck. They also make a lot of dishes dirty. But the result is totally worth it! Plus, you can make a huge batch because they freeze really well, so that means you can pull out a few here and there throughout the year without having to go to the trouble of making a new batch each time. That’s what we do!
Our dad is also a big fan of white chocolate, so when we found this Red Velvet Thumbprint Cookie recipe, we definitely had to try it. They turned out great! While the whoopie pies will always be our favorite, these cookies are a great substitute if you don’t have the time to make red velvet whoopie pies.
If you’re not a fan of white chocolate, you could use milk chocolate or even dark chocolate instead for the “thumbprint” part. The white and red look really great together, so you’ll lose that effect, but it’s an option you can definitely consider. You could also get the colored chocolate meting chips to really customize the colors on these cookies. Pink on the red cookie would look sweet for Valentine’s Day for example. Use your imagination!
My dad also likes the other kind of Red Velvet Cookies my mom makes.
These are made using a sugar cookie mix, so they really couldn’t be easier! After they are cooled, they can some yummy icing, and we like to sprinkle with some chopped nuts. You could also leave them plain or sprinkle with jimmies, sugar sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or whatever else strikes your fancy. We like to make some of each, especially when we take them along to parties or potlucks, so everyone can have their favorite cookie topping.
