When I first saw a pinned image of someone cutting a ball of dough with a pair of scissors, it immediately caught my attention. It looked pretty simple and had a decent looking sugar cookie recipe to go with it.
I’m officially bowing down to the folks over at Better Homes and Gardens that posted this unique cookie idea and yummy recipe. It’s a winner! I will definitely be adding this one to my recipe book to make over and over, again and again.
You’ll need butter, sugar, an egg, milk, vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt.
Cream the butter and sugar together with an electric mixer on medium speed. Make sure the butter’s softened, or you’re not going to have a fun time doing this! Once it’s well combined, add the egg, milk, and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients. I like to combine it in the measuring cup I used for the flour. One less messy bowl!
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until well combined. You can start by using your mixer, but will need to finished mixing by hand due to the dough’s consistency.
Cover and chill until able to handle easily (about an hour).
Form dough into balls, roll in colored sugar, and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
I cheated and used half sugar and half colored sugar, since I was running low on the red stuff. But I actually think it turned out better that way! Gotta love happy accidents in the kitchen.
At this point you could just flatten the dough ball using the bottom of a glass or your hand, bake, and call it a day. But that’s no fun… Instead grab a pair of a clean scissors! Seriously…
Use the scissors to cut the ball in half, but not quite all the way down to the bottom on the cookie sheet. Then cut each half into thirds, trying to keep them all even. Next simply spread out the slices to form the petals. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.
Optional: You can add an M&M or Reeses Pieces to the center of the cookie to make it look more like a flower. If you choose to do so, add it before baking, otherwise you’ll have a hard time getting it to stick.
Ta-Da! Festive and not too much more work than a normal cookie. Fair Warning: These are not you soft and chewy kind of sugar cookies. They’re crunchy, but in a GOOD way! They’re like the butter cookies you can buy for the holidays in a tin, but even better. I give this recipe a BIG thumbs up and will definitely be making it again.
(Allison’s note: I loved these too! When I make them myself, I’m going to add colored sugar on top of the cookie too, *after* it is cut. The color was all on the bottom of the cookie, which isn’t as fastive has having color where people can see it!)
