Whoopie pies are a treat our family has made and enjoyed way before they became a ‘thing’ a few years ago. Today you can find recipes for so many flavors! My cousin recently requested chocolate chip whoopie pies, because they are her favorite flavor.
However I could not find a true whoopie pie recipe anywhere for a chocolate chip kind! Every recipe I could find was just a chocolate chip cookie with filling. If that’s your thing, cool. But that’s just not a whoopie pie to me. Call me a traditionalist, but whoopie pies are more cake-like than cookie. I even asked one of my Amish co-workers and she didn’t have a recipe for chocolate chip whoopie pies (which also happened to be her favorite flavor. What are the odds?).
So I decided to just figure it out myself! I found many recipes that use a cake mix as a base, so I started there with a white cake mix and doctored it up with extra flour, baking soda, and chocolate chips. After a little testing and playing around, I was pretty happy and assembled the whoope pies with a standard classic filling. I headed out the door to visit my cousin and her family for a taste test and earned two thumbs up all round!
It’s #Choctoberfest right now, which means we have an awesome stand mixer giveaway going on. Plus, if you scroll down you can see other yummy chocolate recipes from participating bloggers!
